Week beginning October 20th

This week the learning focus is Healthy Food with the Personal Quality being Cooperation. The P1 will practice using the terms Knowledge, Skills and Understanding through many focused learning activities.

The 4 learning strands are;

Independence and Interdependence

1.17 playing alone, alongside others and with others


2.14 using mathematical symbols and concepts


3.8 moving in space and moving to rhythm

This week the children will learn about food that is Healthy and food that can be unhealthy when too much of it is eaten. The books that will be used to help are; Oliver’s Vegetables, Oliver’s Fruit Salad and the non-fiction text Fruit and Vegetable alphabet.  The children will learn how to sort food into groups; Fruit and Vegetables, Protein, Carbohydrates and Diary. To show this knowledge they will make a food plate with food from each of the 4 food groups.

The children will have the opportunity to use ipads to help with their learning by taking photos of healthy and non-healthy foods. Games played in the classroom will help the children learn about cooperation and playing alone, alongside others and with others. 

The artist Giuseppe Archiboldo was born in Italy and was famous for using fruit and vegetables in his art to represent portraits. The children will learn how to make faces using fruits and vegetables. They will also learn how to make a healthy fruit salad, make the recipe using pictures and sing a fruit salad song to help understand the recipe further.

The sounds that the children will be learning over the next two weeks are; c, k and e. I will review the sounds previously learned s,a,t,i,p and n. Now the children have the knowledge and skills to read and write these words; at, is, in, it, sat, sit, spin, pat, pit, pet, ten, pen, neck, pick. The High Frequency words that they children will read this week are; in, the, I, on, he and she.


Home learning links

This week parents could;

-          make a salad with your child / healthy meal

-          chop, peel, grate and taste different fruits and vegetables

-          talk about where some of the fruits and vegetables come from around the world

-          count the fruits and vegetables in the house each day and try to say the beginning sound of each

-          read books each night and talk about the story.

-     practice writing the sounds - s,a,t,i,p,n,c,k and e.
