Learning for NEXT WEEK:

How can you be a great competitor?

That is the Big Question that will lead our IEYC learning this week. We move away from The Three Billy Goats Gruff and continue our journey exploring our new Once Upon a Time story The Tortoise and The Hare.

This week we will:
- meet a real tortoise and learn how to care for it
- organise a special mini-olympics event
    - organise tickets
    - organise decorations
    - organise the event
    - learn cheers and chants

We will learn lots of songs about the way animals move and explore these movements through dance and drama!
We will also reflect on what the Personal Qualities the characters showed in the story.

At home you can watch the video and then discuss this question:

What Personal Qualities do you think the tortoise and the hare showed in the story?

Maths Learning:

This week will be begin to explore measuring length and height. We will measure all different types of this in the classroom and outside! We will use a range of non-standard units including paperclips, blocks, foot steps, giant links and paper chains! We will link this learning to our animal sports day as part of our IEYC and challenge the children to make the longest paper chain for our sports day!

Literacy Learning:

Continuing on our focus on building phonemic awareness and begin to manipulate sounds in words. We will continue to challenge the children to delete sound in words. We will concentrate on deleting the last sound of words in order to find a new secret word! For example - what is "plane" without the /n/.... "play"

We will also progress with our letter formation development, learning new shapes from our story "Casey the Caterpillar." Here is a comprehensive list of the shapes we are learning. The children will learn to make letters using this language. We call the lines we write on branches and the letters sit on the branch (except for the possum tail and hanging stick which go underneath the branch!)

You can practice using these shapes and saying when practicing at home to write your names!
