Learning for w/c 14/9/15

This week we start our new learning all about 'Food'. The main focus will be our Entry Point, Knowledge Harvest and Explaining the themes. An area in the classroom will transform into a functioning Cafe which the children are very excited about. Each week there will be a different skill for the children to focus on. This week they will be piping icing onto biscuits in the cafe. 

Food:

Entry Point; 

Early Years Strand - 3.4 taking part in symbolic, pretend or dramatic play
- making signs to decorate / inform customers of menu choices
- discussing roles in a café
- decide on the layout of the café  

Cooperation will be the Personal Quality Focus

Early Years Strand - 1.7 Respecting and interacting with people who are different from themselves
- Using a map put photos where everyone lives. Show the flags of our class countries. Talk about the similarities of where everyone comes from. Does anyone know where there picnic food comes from?  

Communication and Respect will be the Personal Quality Focus

Knowledge Harvest: Communication will be the Personal Quality focus. 
 
Read ‘an alphabet of food’. 
Use Cooperative Learning Structure Rally Robin.  What foods they know, any interesting thoughts they have connected to food etc.
 
On 3 sheets of A3 have 3 questions;
1.        Where does food come from?
2.       How do you cook food?
3.       Does everyone around the world eat the same food? 

Record all the children’s ideas and continually refer to this as the Knowledge Harvest to help the children know what it is and why its important. Show the children where it will be in the classroom.  
Record anything they would like to learn / children’s interests & any questions for future enquiry. Explain this is a special area to be added to whenever they find out new information or when they understand some of the previous questions asked.

Math Learning;

Cooperative Learning Strategies used this week in Math are;
Rally interview – How can you sort these food cards?  Each partner will have 6 cards.  
Quiz Quiz Trade - Using number cards to 8.

1. Recorded learning:
The children will have an assortment of objects to sort and then record by size and by type. 
Learning Outcomes; 
I can sort by size.  
I can sort by type. 
Thoughtfulness will be the Personal Quality focus.

2. Research:
Independently explore sorting in the math centre. 
Morality will be the Personal Quality focus.
 
3.Practically sort food cards by colour, size, likes and dislikes to make a group graph. 
Early Years Strand - 3.11 looking for patterns, classifying things for a purpose, guessing, using trial and error
Communication and Enquiry  will be the Personal Quality focus.

Literacy;
The phonics learning in P1 will look like this;

1. Writing t on paper. 
Learning Outcome: I can form t correctly.  
Thoughtfulness will be the Personal Quality focus 

2. Practice writing t on white boards. 
Learning Outcome: I can form t correctly. 
Morality will be the Personal Quality focus 

3. Draw t in the sand/make with play dough. 
Learning Outcome: I can form t correctly. 
Respect will be the Personal Quality focus 

4. Find t words using a selection of word/picture cards. 
Learning Outcome: I can identify t.
Enquiry will be the Personal Quality focus 

5. Make a tiger in a tent  – fine motor control using scissors. 
Learning Outcome: I can use scissors to cut along an outline. 
Resilience will be the Personal Quality focus 

6. Paint t pictures. 
Learning Outcome: I know pictures beginning with t.  
Adaptability will be the Personal Quality focus 

Cooperative Learning Strategies used this week in Literacy are;
Rally Read – Using food books to find the sounds a, s, and t.  
Quiz Quiz Trade - Using picture and words cards.


As you can see its another busy and exciting week in P1. I am very proud of how adaptable the children have been especially learning / remembering to change their reading books each day. Well done P1!!!!
