This week we continue our introduction to our new IPC Unit called Patterns. The learning letter is available to download on the nursery main page on the website. (We also sent one home in your tray before the February long weekend).

On Monday and Tuesday this week the children will take part in their Knowledge Harvest where they will share and discuss their previous knowledge ideas about patterns.We will record what the children say onto a large sheet of paper as a record of our previous knowledge. Then we will use it as a reflection tool to refer back to each time we build on new knowledge throughout the Unit.

We continue our special focus on the Dear Zoo story this week and next. We will explore all the different patterns found on zoo animals and make some of our own!

This week’s personal quality focus continues to be Morality. To help support the children’s understanding of what morality looks like, children will revise the Selfish Crocodile story. This book links to our new animal patterns theme.

These are four main learning strands that we are focusing on this week;

Independence and Interdependence

1.8 taking responsibility for their own actions

2.20 using different media to express a mood or a feeling or for represent different information

3.11 looking for patterns, classifying things for a purpose, guessing using trial and error

Healthy Living

4.5 concentrating

This week you can help your child look around your home for any patterns which are hiding. Look at bed sheets, curtains, blinds, table cloth, clothing, rugs, lampshades etc. Support your child in describing each pattern. In class we are beginning to use the describing words; stripes, zigzags, spots, waves, swirls, polka dot etc. Email us a photo of any special patterns you find in your home! :-)

* Please remember that the children’s song books should be returned by Thursday each week. We are unable to glue in the new song unless we have the song books in advance to Friday. Thank you we appreciate your help in this.
